Why choose us?

Excellent foster carers are at the heart of successful fostering. We invest in you to become the best foster carer, delivering the highest level of support and positive outcomes for the children that come into your care.

Every foster carer that chooses Calon Cymru becomes part of our local fostering family, and here’s what you can expect from us.

We're your local independent fostering agency

We focus on improving the lives of children and young people in Wales, which is why we're based in Wales. Social workers are based throughout our region, ensuring there's always someone nearby. We have two local offices, making it easier for you to access our teams, and we ensure that our training is available locally to suit your needs. All this means you have more time to focus on creating a brighter future for your foster children!

We will support you

Whilst we know that fostering is a rewarding and fulfilling career, we also understand that it can be challenging. That is why we have a dedicated social work team available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to support you.

During your application process, we are with you every step of the way, supporting you on your fostering journey. This doesn’t stop when you become a carer. You’ll have a dedicated social worker and a team of support workers supporting and working with you. We’re there when you need us. We also give you a foster carer ‘buddy’ – someone who has been through the process and has become a foster carer with us. They will have a unique perspective and can provide different types of support.

We will invest in you

Your vast life experience, whatever your background, is a great step towards being able to provide a good and stable home for a foster child or young person. We will help to boost your knowledge and skills at the start of and throughout your fostering journey with us.

Our specialist training programme is tailored to suit the types of fostering that suit your fostering household.

We will find the right match

Welcoming someone into your home can be daunting. We do everything we can to ensure that each foster placement works for your fostering family and the child in our care. Our expert placements team works tirelessly to find the right match for each child and young person in our care. You will always get to choose who you bring into your home. Successful and stable placements improve life chances for children looked-after. This is why we do what we do and are so passionate about it!

Common Questions

You will be assigned a supervising social worker once you have been approved as a foster carer. They will pay you a visit every two weeks to discuss your foster child's growth. Furthermore, members of our team are accessible to communicate with you at any time, day or night, 365 days a year. There are also regular local foster carer support meetings where you can meet other foster carers in your area.

There are several! Once approved as a foster carer, there are numerous opportunities to learn more about child safety, behaviour management, fostering self-esteem in children, first aid, and so much more!

We cover all South and West Wales from our offices in Cardiff and Carmarthen. View details of our two local offices here.

You will receive advice and information from one of our team members during your initial phone contact. When you are ready, you will be assigned a dedicated assessor who will visit you and assist you throughout the process. A referee, medical, and DBS check will be done, and you will be asked to undergo a 'Skills to Foster' training session. The assessment procedure typically takes 4-6 months.
