Is Fostering the Perfect Next Chapter for Empty Nesters?

As your children grow up and move on to begin their own journeys, you might find yourself feeling a mix of emotions. While you are proud of their independence, your once busy home can quickly feel quiet and you long for the chaos that once filled the rooms.

There is no need to see this as a loss, in fact, it is a time of opportunity, a time for you to take on new challenges. If you find yourself wanting to fill those empty rooms with love and fun again and take the chance to share that newly found time and space fostering could be the perfect way forward for you.

Fostering offers a unique opportunity to welcome young people into your home who need a safe space to grow and thrive. Providing them with the care and support they need can make a profound difference in their lives—all while reigniting a sense of purpose in your own.

Why is fostering a fantastic option for parents whose children have flown the nest and how can it benefit both you and the children in need of care?

Why Consider Fostering?

1. You Have the Experience and Skills

Having raised your own children, you possess a treasure trove of parenting experiences. You've navigated the highs and lows—joys, tantrums, homework crises, and those cherished heart-to-heart conversations. These invaluable skills can seamlessly transfer to fostering.

Fostering often mirrors the highs and lows, challenges and moments of joy that parenting brings and in these moments nothing beats experience. The skills you have developed as a parent can support teenagers and children and provide the stability and understanding that these children desperately need during difficult times.

2. A Chance to Give Back

Fostering is more than just providing a home; it’s about making a meaningful connection with children and young people who have had adverse experiences in their lives and giving them the opportunity to have positive life experiences.

Many children in care have faced challenging beginnings, whether due to neglect, abuse, or difficult family circumstances. They need a safe, nurturing environment to heal and grow. As a foster carer, you play a vital role in their journey, offering the guidance and support they may not have previously received.

This role requires compassion, patience, and an open heart. The joy of knowing you are helping to change a child's life is immeasurable, creating bonds that often last a lifetime, even after they’ve moved on.

3. Filling the Space Left by an Empty Nest

As a parent, your life can become defined by routine, school runs, swimming lessons, dance classes and being a taxi driver at the will of your children. And while many parents playfully complain about their busy lives they often miss the sense of purpose that it brings, the way they can give their children what they need.

Fostering can help bridge that gap and bring back that sense of being able to provide the care these children need as well as filling your home with children’s laughter once again.

Whether you choose to foster long-term, short-term, or offer respite care, fostering brings lively energy back into your life.

4. Support and Training Are Provided

People often have concerns about whether they are equipped to take on the role of foster carers. As a parent, you will already bring a wealth of experience to the role but that doesn’t mean you will be left to your own devices. As a Calon Cymru foster carer, you will be provided all of the specialist training required to enable you to feel able to take on the role. From initial training to continuous professional development, you’ll have all the tools you need to thrive as a foster carer.

You will also have a dedicated Supervising Social worker, around the clock access to a duty social worker 365 days a year for any extra support you need and regular support groups where you can meet with other foster carers in your area.

Making a Real Difference

The cold truth is that the need for foster carers in Wales is growing daily. The number of children needing foster carers is at an all-time high. This can be either temporary or long-term due to family breakdowns, parental illness, or abuse. There is currently a notable shortage of foster carers, particularly for older children, siblings, and those with additional needs. By choosing to foster, you can help fill this critical gap, offering stability during some of the most vulnerable moments in a child’s life.

Fostering provides more than just a roof over their heads; it offers a sense of belonging, security, and a chance for these children to rebuild trust in adults.
