We love sharing the inspiring stories of our dedicated foster carers. Today, we celebrate the remarkable journey of Phillipa, a foster carer who has been making a difference for over twenty years. Her story highlights her commitment to fostering and inspires others who may be considering this rewarding career.
Phillipa’s career has always been focused around young people. Before taking on a career in foster care, she worked as a community family support officer, as well as having held roles in a hospital and social services. These roles contributed to the essential skills that Phillipa has brought to supporting young people as a foster carer alongside the experience of raising her own daughter.
When asked about her motivation to become a foster carer, Phillipa expressed her desire to help young people achieve the best possible outcomes.
“I wanted to be able to help young people achieve the best possible outcomes, I believe through love and kindness you change how children see the world.”
Phillipa has dedicated twenty years to fostering, a journey that she describes as having flown by. The skills she gained from her professional experiences have proven invaluable in her role as a foster carer.
“Working with birth families and their children allowed me to see life from their perspective, this has been hugely beneficial in my fostering role.”
One of the most fulfilling aspects of fostering for Phillipa is witnessing the children in her care flourish and move on successfully. The rewards of fostering are immeasurable, and she is proud to also take on the role of a "foster nanny,".
Phillipa chose to foster with Calon Cymru based on a recommendation of a colleague she previously worked with.
“I have never looked back!! The training offered by Calon Cymru Fostering is outstanding and totally relevant.”
When asked if she would recommend Calon Cymru Fostering, Phillipa's response was an enthusiastic, "Absolutely, without hesitation!" For those considering fostering, her advice is clear: "Come to Calon Cymru; you will be supported all the way! If you have time, patience and love to give, fostering can be a rewarding career.”
“Fostering is a real community, and I have made many friends over the years, it has been a special journey and a big part of my life.”
Phillipa’s story is just one of many that demonstrate the profound impact of fostering. At Calon Cymru, we celebrate our foster carers and the incredible work they do every day. If you’re inspired by Phillipa’s journey and want to learn more about becoming a foster carer, we encourage you to reach out and discover how you can make a difference in a child’s life.
