When Sessional Support Worker Sam reached out to us about her Coppafeel challenge we jumped at the chance to contribute to this fantastic cause. Following her own battle with cancer, Sam is now taking the opportunity to help raise awareness and encourage everyone to check themselves. Here is Sam's story!
"I’m Sam and have been a sessional support worker for Calon Cymru for the past 2 years.
However, I am writing today as a member of CoppaFeel’s Isle of Skye charity trek team for 2025.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer aged 40, had 2 surgeries, radiotherapy and 5 years of drug treatment. Early detection and prompt treatment have allowed me to be here taking part in this trek 15 years later as a healthy and grateful 55 year old.
In June this year I along with 119 other like minded women (all of whom have their own cancer story) Giovana Fletcher, a handful of men and a sprinkling of celebrities will be walking an emotional 100KM over 5 days in the rugged and hilly Isle of Skye to raise money for CoppaFeel this amazing Breast Cancer charity that focuses on early diagnosis and prompt treatment for young people by raising awareness and encouraging them to check their chests!
CoppaFeel! is the UK’s only youth-focused breast cancer awareness charity, and we’re on a mission to get every 18-24 year old checking their chest. We educate people on the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and encourage them to check their chests regularly so that if they notice something unusual, they are empowered to contact their GP and advocate for themselves. We do this because when diagnosed early, breast cancer treatments are more effective and survival rates are higher. Early detection can save lives.
To ensure all breast cancers in young people are diagnosed early and accurately.
As a team, we are hoping to raise £450,000 to help fund the work of CoppaFeel.
Any donation, no matter how small, would be very gratefully received. Thank you.

Although fundraising is an important part of this trek, we are also keen to make everyone, no matter their age or gender (men get breast cancer too), aware of the importance of checking their chests monthly and seeking advice if they discover anything out of the ordinary.
Many thanks to Calon Cymru for giving me the opportunity to share CoppaFeel’s message and for their very kind donation to this great cause.

What would you say to spending 40 days out on the open sea with three of your friends, sounds great right?
Calon Cymru is proud to provide player sponsorship to Porth Harlequins RFC senior player Davon Davies. Davon, aged 19 lives in a fostering household, his parents Mel and Mike are foster carers with Calon Cymru, something they decided to do after Davon suggested finding out more information about fostering three years ago.
The Kickboxing World Championship 2023 was held in Calgary, Canada in October. Amongst the athletes competing was Sophie, granddaughter of Calon Cymru Supervising Social Worker Sandra Wheatley. Sophie has dedicated much of her life to kickboxing and we were privileged to be one of the official sponsors of the Welsh team and support them in getting to Canada to prove their skills on the world stage
