Family Activities for October Half Term

It’s come around fast, but October half term is here! This week is the perfect time for foster families to bond and create long lasting memories together. To help with this, here are some local, inclusive activities that you can all enjoy to help make the most of the half term break.

Nature Walks and Pumpkin Picking

Explore the beautiful Welsh countryside! Organise a nature walk where children can collect autumn leaves, pinecones, and acorns. Create a scavenger hunt list with items to find, encouraging children to connect with nature and learn about their environment. Or if you’re wanting to head outdoors, why not take advantage of the pumpkin season? Visit a local pumpkin patch and pick your own pumpkin. Once home, spend an afternoon carving and decorating them together in preparation for Halloween on Thursday.

Movie Marathon Night

Choose a theme such as animated films or Halloween family favourites, and host a movie marathon night. Create a cozy atmosphere with blankets and popcorn and settle down for some relaxing quality time together. If you’re struggling with finding something to watch, or decide that you’d like to watch a film with a link to foster care, you can find our recommendations here.

Visit Local Attractions and Community Events

Check out local attractions and community events that offer family-friendly activities during the half term. The Welsh Museums Festival is running this week, and it promises special events and activities for children and adults of all ages at more than 40 museums across Wales. Many of the events are free entry, with each offering something different, from special guests to free activity booklets to keep little ones amused.

Arts, Crafts and Baking

Get everyone’s creative juices flowing by doing some arts and crafts and baking. From creating autumn themed decorations and cupcakes to baking cookies and crafting friendship bracelets, these activities are fantastic ways for children to express themselves and bond with the whole family, whilst creating a sense of accomplishment. Whatever you choose to do this week, and whatever the wonderful Welsh weather has in store for us all, remember that the goal is to enjoy each other’s company and have fun together. If our wonderful team of foster carers need any help from Calon Cymru, we are available as always. We hope you have a great week, with no tricks, but lots of treats!
